Myanmar Included in Proposed Trump Travel Restrictions
The Trump administration is reportedly considering a new travel ban that could affect citizens from up to 43 countries, citing national security and public safety concerns. Myanmar has been placed in the second tier of countries facing significant visa restrictions under the proposed Trump Travel Restrictions.
This potential ban, which aims to address perceived threats to the U.S., would expand on the travel restrictions implemented during President Trump’s first term. According to officials familiar with the matter, the new measures would be broader in scope and more stringent.
A draft proposal, Trump Travel Restrictions, detailed in an internal memo obtained by several U.S. media outlets, categorizes countries into three tiers: red, orange, and yellow. The “red” tier includes 11 countries whose citizens would be completely barred from entering the United States. These countries are Afghanistan, Bhutan, Cuba, Iran, Libya, North Korea, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, Venezuela, and Yemen.
Myanmar falls into the “orange” category, which would impose restrictions on immigrant, tourist, and student visas, with limited exceptions. Other countries in this tier include Belarus, Eritrea, Haiti, Laos, Pakistan, Russia, Sierra Leone, South Sudan, and Turkmenistan.
The “yellow” category includes countries that would be given 60 days to address concerns raised by the U.S. government. Failure to do so could result in these nations being moved to the more restrictive “red” or “orange” categories. Countries in this group include Angola, Antigua and Barbuda, Benin, Burkina Faso, Cambodia, Cameroon, Chad, Congo, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the Dominican Republic, Gambia, Guinea, Liberia, Malawi, Mali, Mauritania, São Tomé and Príncipe, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Vanuatu, and Zimbabwe.
Officials, who spoke anonymously due to the sensitivity of the discussions, noted that the list was drafted by the State Department several weeks ago and could undergo changes before being finalized by the White House. The proposed ban reflects the administration’s ongoing efforts to tighten immigration and travel policies in the name of national security.
