These operations often involve fraudulent investment schemes, romance scams, and other forms of cyber fraud designed to extract money from vulnerable individuals.

The Human Toll: Stories of Survival

Aneka Boram is one of thousands who have recently escaped from these so-called scam centers. She recounts a harrowing experience of captivity, where any form of resistance was met with brutal punishment. Many captives are subjected to physical abuse, starvation, and constant surveillance, leaving them with no means of escape.

A Sri Lankan woman, another survivor, was also trafficked into one of these cybercrime hubs. She was forced to conduct illegal online activities, scamming victims out of their savings. Her ordeal is a testament to the widespread nature of this crisis, affecting people from different countries who are unknowingly caught in the web of these operations.

United Nations’ Efforts to Combat the Crisis

One of the most senior officials at the United Nations has spoken out against these cyber scam compounds, highlighting the urgent need for international cooperation to dismantle these criminal networks. Efforts include pressuring governments to crack down on the perpetrators, rescuing victims, and providing them with rehabilitation and support.
