The Myanmar military junta is attempting to open a university in Hakha, which is the capital city of Chin State in Myanmar.
Local residents of Hakha, Chin State, say that it is impractical for the military council’s Ministry of Education to open Haka University. The Ministry of Education under the military council announced on August 18, 2024, that successful candidates of the 2024 university entrance exams can apply for university admission from August 26 to September 12, even on weekends.
A local resident from Hakha stated, “Even last year, the number of students was very low, and now that there are conflicts occurring around the school area, who would go and apply? It’s not possible.” Among the 23 universities where successful candidates of the 2024 entrance exams can apply, Hakha University in Chin State is included.
CDF-Hakha announced that the main road leading from Haka University towards Thantlang has been closed to traffic since August 20. It is known that the joint forces of the Chinland Council, led by CNF/A and including CDF-Hakha, have been launching attacks and capturing military council camps along the Hakha-Thantlang road since July 22, and that fighting continues to be intense.
Out of more than 400 students from Chin State who took the 2023-2024 academic year university entrance exams conducted by the Ministry of Education under the military council, 338 students passed.
