In Htigyaing Township, Sagaing Region, revolutionary forces attacked the Myataung military base, which is occupied by the junta. During the attack, they successfully seized three of the junta’s security posts, and the fighting has continued to intensify.
This morning, August 21, joint revolutionary forces launched an assault on the Myataung base, one of the key positions held by the junta in Htigyaing. As a result, they captured the security posts within the base. In response, the junta deployed fighter jets to bomb the area.
A source from the Irrawaddy Times reported, “There has been fighting in Myataung since this morning. The military started bombing yesterday. Today, jets are dropping bombs, and gunfire exchanges can be heard.”
On August 20, the junta also launched airstrikes using jets and Y-12 aircraft, dropping three 500-pound bombs and a total of 67 smaller bombs, primarily targeting the Myataung area on the opposite bank of the river from Htigyaing.
Additionally, the junta has fortified positions on Myathaingtan Mountain, near the Htigyaing Bridge, and at the Myataung junction, constructing bunkers and securing the area.
Revolutionary forces have been actively engaging in battles along the Indaw, Naba, and Katha routes within the Sagaing Region, with rumors of an upcoming offensive to seize towns. It is reported that around 500 junta troops are stationed around Htigyaing in preparation.
Since November 8, 2023, the Kachin Independence Army (KIA), the Arakan Army (AA), and local LPDF groups have launched an offensive against Htigyaing, successfully capturing numerous bases. However, after intense aerial bombardment by the junta, which caused widespread destruction in the town, the revolutionary forces were forced to withdraw. The junta troops then launched a ground offensive, entering the town and setting fire to it.
